The Problem

Why Towers.net website?

Since I moved to Austin, Texas in August 2019, I’ve been fascinated by this city and how it’s booming economically. I love touring around downtown and marveling over the newest additions. I chose this website to improve because I’m a frequent visitor and enthusiast of the website’s news. Redesigning this website was a challenge for me because I love the content so much but it’s been fun to add my personal improvements.

It feels as though this website is targeted at real estate industries who are looking for advertisement or listings and I wanted to make it more entertaining for people like me, who are really excited about new buildings and projects around Austin.

I started by noting everything that I want to change for a better, more inclusive, experience for the users:

  • A better way to find old news about a specific building, especially as the city is changing so quickly

  • A separate page for every building around Austin that features detailed information under category tabs

  • Ability to create an personal account with the website

My solution

Style:

I wanted to keep the same red and white color theme from the website. I also wanted to implement my minimalist design style to update the website with my creative touch. I also used “Roboto" as a font for keeping it modern.

Homepage:

My challenge was to make sure all of the most important information was still here and easy to find. For that I:

  • Re-designed the top navigation menu

  • Added a new search bar on the top navigation menu to help the users find old news more easily

  • Replaced the “listings” tab with a “buildings” tab

  • Added an option to “Log-in” and “Sign-up” on top navigation menu. It will help the website gain more following and create an opportunity for more comments and community

  • Updated the comments section with a logo instead of written explanation for more efficiency

New Buildings page:

I created this new page to provide:

  • A list of the most important buildings around Austin

  • An easier visual research experience

“The Independant” page

After choosing a building on the building list page, this website will bring you to a new page for each building. I added:

  • A new navigation menu combining “Details” “News” and “Listings” as tabs

  • A brand new design for the “Details” page that is more minimalist and modern.

Conclusion

Thank you for taking a look at this project: “Re-Designing Towers.net to Improve Information Architecture”. This is an example of my self-driven work to improve a website that I love, while also practicing my design skills. In turn, projects like this continue to drive my passion!
